To create a new high density living experience, we wanted to re-conceptualize building mass, to blend environments and stitch the building into not just its site, but also its place. In the beginning, this project had but two goals: to create an efficient building that maximized the site and to create an expression that the client felt was “fucking rad.” Expanding on the Morrison Street Apartment model, this 27 unit apartment building is conceived of as a loose stack of building blocks that provide long exposures for light and air to each unit. We wanted to create a cohesive and inclusive language for the building- a spatial and visual “plaid” that can structure a more sophisticated and satisfying web of spaces. This stacking results in both a collaged living environment and also a surprising level of building density and efficiency.
